What Should I Do If My Car is Using a lot of Oil?

by | May 10, 2024 | Auto Questions, Car Problems & Repairs

If you are having to top of your oil levels frequently or your car is using a lot more than normal, the first step is to arrange for an oil consumption test over the next few weeks. This will tell us the severity of the problem. From there we can examine for potential causes.

If your car is using a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, then just topping off the oil could be the best solution.

However, if your car is using more than this amount, it could be damaging your catalytic converters, and you may need to consider replacing the engine. But before spending thousands of dollars on a new engine, there are other options we can try first.

We can try adding chemicals to the oil and gasoline in the car to see if that will help decrease oil usage. We can also add a dynamic flushing cleaning solution to try to free up the piston oil control rings. This is a more involved process and can take from 3 to 4 hours. The success of this solution depends on how gummed up the oil control rings are and also how well the engine has been maintained.

In the final analysis, we need to work together to make sure we find the solution for your car’s situation.
