A Close to Home Story About Long-Term Car Ownership

I heard a group of people chatting about the cars they have owned over the years, and it seemed like most people change cars frequently, sometimes every few years. Sometimes it is just because they want to upgrade to the latest and greatest in new car technology. However, it seems that most people are just concerned about the reliability of older cars for long-term car ownership. This is a myth that I would like to dispel.

When we first went into business 46 years ago it was common for people to change their car frequently. Back then, cars were not as reliable as they are today. The rule of thumb was often “50,000 miles and it’s time to buy new.”

If properly maintained, today’s vehicles can stay on the road much longer. Coming from England I was trained to follow the manufacturer maintenance schedule. Maintenance schedules are designed to look after the vehicle and catch things before they break.

However, there are people who keep their cars a long, long time.  In fact, I know someone who has only owned 3 cars in 41 years.

  • 2000-2016 Acura TL
  • 2016-2024 Acura RDX

That person is my wife, Jennifer. Here at BA Auto Care, we practice what we preach. Looking after your car with regular preventative maintenance pays off in decades and decades of reliable service. Car ownership isn’t as concerning when your car is properly taken car of.
