Catalytic converter theft is on the rise across the county. Certain cars are targeted more than others, such as the Toyota Prius. The Prius is an easy target for two reasons. First, they are very easy to access and cut off quickly. Secondly, they are expensive, earning the thieves more when they sell them.
Each converter is worth anywhere from $300 to $500 on the open market due to the precious metals inside. However, the cost of a new converter replacement is a lot more expensive, and the thieves can also damage other parts of the exhaust system like the oxygen sensors and gaskets. In the case of a Prius, the converter is even more expensive because the converter and the resonator are all one pipe. But here is some good news! At BA Auto Care, we have found a shield that protects converters from being accessible to potential thieves. Not too long ago, the converters on our two loaner Prius were stolen. We ordered these shields to see how well they worked and see if they would fit and protect these expensive parts. The photos included on this blog show a Prius with the converter missing and with the shield in place to protect it.
